Listen for the interests already there
Children often tell adults what matters to them through the things they choose to do. When a child says, “I like this,” it can be the beginning of career exploration. The next step is not to assign a job title. It is to ask what they enjoy about the activity and what else they might want to try.
Connect interests with possibilities
A child who enjoys drawing might explore graphic design. A child who enjoys building might become curious about carpentry, engineering, construction, or skilled trades. A child who enjoys helping others might learn about education, healthcare, public service, or counseling. A child fascinated by airplanes can explore aviation careers, while a child who loves books may be interested in librarianship, writing, publishing, or education.
